Hmm...may have to find a copy just for this bit; currently using MusE hooked
up to a MIDI keyboard at the moment. Could be worth finding out what else is
about (and what people think of them). I've been reading up on softsynths
recently and I really ought to start using them. I know MusE supports Fluid
(ne' iiwusynth), but finding any hard information on good MIDI sequencers
and software on Linux has been a bit of a futile search, with
linux-sound.org being about the only half-decent site out there.

But MusE is good (for anyone who's interested) and has the added benefit of
/not/ requiring gnome or KDE libs (does need QT though). It's still under
heavy development, but it is an active project and is rather swishy, and
certainly useable in its current state.
