RE: [Sheflug] Printing on a Novell Printer
Nicola
I just typed in a whole list of stuff you should consider then re read your
mail and realised none of it was relevant. Try using a text editor like Vi
or Kate (not sure what ships with red hat) to print a text only file (e.g. a
file with the line "test print" in it). If this works then you can be sure
you've got the correct permissions etc. Then you need to check the type of
printer you are printing to to make sure the drivers are compatible. For HP
Laserjet printers (which IIRC Sheff. Uni use) you could try printing using a
HP LaserJet 4 drivers which IME under windows will print successfully to
most HP printers (not sure about under Linux but if its all postscript it
should work). Of course if you're just getting blank paper and you are the
only person using the printer don't forget to check that there is ink/toner
in the printer! Do a test print to make sure the printer prints.

What I wrote before I read
You may well need to make a connection to the Novell servers in order to get
access to the print Qs that the printers service. I used to work at
Sheffield Hallam and this was the case there. The printers were set up to
only take their print jobs from a print queue on the servers and you could
only put a job in the queue if you were a registered user. Not sure if this
is the case at Sheffield Uni. but its the usual way things are set up. You
haven't said whether you log in to the university network when you connect
your laptop to the network or if you just log in to your PC. If you only
log in to your IMO PC you need to get your PC logged in to the NetWare
servers before you'll be able to print.
