Debian is lightweight in that the base distribution is only a few tens
of megs to have installed and working, and everything above that is
basically just the stuff you want. But yeah, it's a big package
collection ;)

Although you can cheat and install via Knoppix :o)

There is an easier way. Before installing X, install mdetect, read-edid
and discover. X will then be automatically configured using hardware
detection when you install it - in fact, I don't think it will ask you
anything if your debconf volume is turned down low.

.. and eximconfig, which is a very nice tool.
