[Sheflug] Re: RAID 1 vs 10 & fixing dual-boot MBR via GRUB
Hi Guys,
Sat Country Bookshop meeting was great - thanks for the hints
on rewriting the MBR after dual-boot killed by loading Win XP.
Thought I'd post the instructions that worked for me (RH 7.3) for
future reference. They're basically exactly what's on the website
suggested by Bill Best (www.sorgonet.com/linux/grubrestore/):
1. Bootup using RedHat boot disk in floppy drive.
2. Run grub
3. Findout where GRUB files live (2 possibilities):
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 [ => Error 15: File not found ]
grub> find /grub/stage1 [ => (hd0,1) ]
4. Tell it where GRUB files live and then do the install:
grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
5. Reboot and voila - dual-boot is back! So simple!
Note: Some people suggested using grub-install rather than grub,
but reading the info grub pages it mentioned that that was less
safe as it makes assumptions about your setup that might
not be true. Anyway the above is so easy.
Also, I seem to recall somebody was asking about the difference
between RAID 1 & 10 recently - try the Transtec information site:
http://www.transtec.co.uk/GB/e/compendium/
and select 5. Hard Disks and RAID for loads of helpful info.
By the way, I just bought a 160 GB hot-pluggable USB2/Firewire HD
and Firewire card from Transtec for under £200 which works fine
under both Windows and Linux (Win was plug-n-play but Linux
required a bit of fiddling). Great way to move masses of data
around the lab or around the world.
Cheers, Jan
