Hi,

For a basic backup try using multicd - it is not the best tool,
though it does work. After that you can have time to play with scripting.

A good introduction to general GNU/Linux programming concepts is found
within the Wrox press Beginning Linux Programming book.

[aside: The packing problem is a varient of the Pigeon Hole Problem is
        it not? ...and thus Turing reducible to the Halting Problem. ]
