Probably violates the 'do not split $HOME' rule though.

Doubtful - we're talking about a one-dimensional packing problem. That's
surely solvable, albeit at exponential computing time. The general packing
problem, maybe. That wouldn't cover, for example, packing spheres - that
is very difficult IIRC.

Most packing problems are hard due to the inability to re-allocate free
space. We don't have that problem on filesystems.
