No error message, but when I do 'ls -l' again, the permissions are unchanged.

ok - 

$ groups
ruth cdwriter

Presumably this means 'I' am in group 'ruth', and so is user 'cdwriter'??

Could the problem be related to the way the FAT32 partition is mounted?
