Just to point out here for the sake of it - in most cases it is an
*extremely dangerous* action to set these permissions on a public site.

As was correctly pointed out by another list member, the real reasons is
due to the filesystem not being one which actually supports these
permissions natively. Please modify the mount options in /etc/fstab to
affect any changes required.
