South Birmingham College FE use Linux as their backend authentication, and for
all their file and print and applications deliver. (or at least they did last
time i visited). They have a very sophisticated setup across multiple sites
and 10,000+ users. Using LDAP for the user accounts and authenticating against
SAMBA, automatic imaging of desktops on boot, remote application deployment, ..
etc all on open source
The CS manager there is Alan Benson [alan [at] sbirmc.ac.uk] , who has always seems
happy to help, at least on the win2k jisc mailing list. I would heartily
recommend giving them a visit, for any medium to large organisation looking to
migrate a Windows NOS environment to Linux / Samba / LDAP .. as their setup was
impressive.
