Yes they are.

Ping works from client but Telnet to port 25 didn't. Telnet (telnet
192.168.100.168 25) didn't work from a root permission shell on the server
either.
Checked p[ostfix was runningIf you can't connect, is it a firewall

Doh, didn't read the firewall screen properly thought it said tick boxes to
protect ports, it says to "permit" ports. Ticked to permit SMTP and telnet
but still no luck. Removed firewall and still can't telnet on 23 or 25
either from client to server or from server to itself on either its IP
address or loopback address. Can ping server from client and from server so
connectivity is there to some extent.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next? Would a reinstall of the OS
help? There is nothing special on the machine at the moment I was just
using it to learn a bit more about linux. However I don't want to reinstall
just for the sake of it.
