No, it can be expensive.  But, if you use your eyes you'll find some
low cost hardware around you at certain times.  Depends what you call
expensive :)  You just have to walk around a bit.

£35 for a wireless network card for a laptop.  £5 to £15 for a 10/100
ethernet card ?

Sounds kind of reasonable :)
