PCMCIA drivers are now in the kernel (2.4.x or better), as well as
being available via the pcmcia-cs package (pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.org
IIRC).

It's largely irrelevant which distro you use, since the drivers are
basically the same.

The only differences are in the scripts used to control PCMCIA
services, which vary from distro to distro.
Most of the differences are documented in the PCMCIA HOWTO, but it
should be pretty straight forward.

I'm not sure just how good cardmgr is at giving you exact locations
when errors occur.
Check /etc/pcmcia/config which contains the bindings of
hardware->driver.

Do you have a block such as:

card "TDK LAK-CD031 Ethernet"
  version "TDK", "LAK-CD031 for PCMCIA"
  bind "pcnet_cs"

in that file?

If it exists, ./config.opts is included by /etc/pcmcia/config:

# Include local configuration settings

source ./config.opts

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Baz.
