(X)Emacs is not a GUI wrapper around sed.  Heck, even vi isn't ;)
(And emacs and Xemacs are pretty gui-ified even if you don't count
curses as a GUI :).  

Digital Unix had a really good disk partitioner where you could
partition a disk with little sliders, rather than having to type in
partition sizes.
