I ended up with a Dlink DSL300G+ and afterwards found a Binatone ADSL
modem in Argos. From the brief description it seems as though it will ok
with Linux (Ethernet and USB).

There's no firewall, sharing or inbuilt NAT, so it'd need attaching. I
really didn't want a router with their inbuilt (possibly broken)
implementations of NAT, Firewalling and Portforwarding.

Best thing about Argos (£54.99 by the way code 676/4199) is that if it
doesn't work you can take it back in 16 days.

I'd look at this if I had to buy hardware again, but I can't really
complain too much about the Dlink (apart from the DHCP lease lasting 5
seconds, and Dlink tech support been stupid).
