Tilde (~) denotes 'insert home directory here'. Therefore
~/mail/=$HOME/mail/.

The 'mailboxes' line bears *no* resemblance to your mailboxes at all. It
simply tells mutt what boxes to check for *new* mail (which
automatically get focus when you use 'c' to change folder).

In this example, all of my stored mailboxes are in /home/nine/mail/,
with my incoming mail spool being /var/mail/nine.

The source is in Debian's non-free repository, make sure you fetch
build-dep before building the package.
