Have you got an example? I don't think I've seen any dated 1970 though. Is 
the time midnight on the emails? If so, then it could well be a default, 
where an MTA or MUA is dating the mail at the epoch[1].

Also, which MUA do you use?

[1] UNIX epoch is when time(2) returns 0 - all UNIXes[2] have this set as 
1970-01-01 00:00:00.
