I believe that wvdial attempts to contact www.suse.de to test DNS.  If it 
can't contact the DNS servers it was given by your ISP you get an error along 
the lines of "cannot contact www.suse.de, address lookup failed.  The 
connection may not work."  If you block the DNS servers with iptables you 
will see this message.

If you boot off the SuSE CD into rescuse mode, mount the partition with /etc 
on and then remove the root password hash from /etc/shadow you will blank the 
root password and you can then log in with no password and change it.
