I can't help with the laptop stuff, but if you want to learn bash, the best
place I've seen is the Advanced Bash-Scripting guide. You can read it online
at:

or download a bzip2 tarball from:

http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/abs-guide-2.2.tar.bz2

Even though it's called an advanced guide it starts from the very basics. 

I'd suggest everyone should read it, even if you already know bash-scripting
you'll pick up lots of tricks you didn't know before.
