Yes.  I've known that for years.  But, most times you do a 
dist-upgrade you find that it works fine. 

I've now switched over to dselect from apt-get to see if that will 
sort things out.  The machine in question has been installing packages 
for two days now after downloading the 470Mb update on a friends 
broadband line.  Tried aptitude, wouldn't play.
