Richard, On Libranet (Debian based disro) mailing list, even if you don't 
change your sources, e.g stable to sid etc.  you should upgrade packages a 
few at a time. This gives you chance to deal with the odd conflict. It's 
recommended only to use dist upgrade if you really know what you are doing or 
are only upgrading a few packages.
