I have a Audigy 2 Platinum that works fine in Linux 2.4 using the ALSA
drivers (using the emu10k1 driver). Works like a dream just remember to
turn the volume up on the channels to use them (and there is a lot! see
below).
The ALSA drivers don't require patching the kernel - just a case of
having the kernel sources configured then issuing the standard
configure, make, make install trio of commands.
