[Sheflug] Kernels, gcc and Alcatel modems

Hi

I have a number of queries resulting from the plan to go ADSL using Linux and an Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB Modem. I have tested the modem under Windows XP and everything seems to work fine there.

I decided to upgrade to Suse 8.2 kernel v.2.4.20 and unfortunately, not only missed the Boot options first time round but also failed to notice it was going to use grub. Result was grub in my MBR and no way of accessing XP and a circuitous route into Linux. So I nuked the lot and went fully over to Linux using LILO.

I have Suse 8.2 lernel v2.4.20 and I can access via demon dialup account.
I would dearly love to get my Alcatel modem working so am hunting for info in order to make best decision.

My present version of gcc is 3.3 and I am downloading 3.3.2 as I write this.

I have read much about DSL in the relevant HOWTO but am aware there are no drivers for the Alcatel Speedtouch 330 in 2.4.20. I have read on
http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/ that the driver is included in 2.4.22 so I hope it hasn't been taken out in 2.4.23 !

I downloaded 2.4.23 last night and have a complete source bz file here which seems to unpack well. I read the README and the Dcoumentation/Changes file which recmmends gcc 2.95.x (x>=3) as the compiler to use.

This results in a number of queries.

1. Has anyone tried compiling a 2.4.xx kernel with a gcc 3.x.x compiler? The Documentation/Changes file seems to indicate there may be problems in compiling the kernel with this class of compiler.

2. If it *really* *is* advisable to use 2.95.3 then can I have both the 3.3.x version and the 2.95.3 version co-existing on the same machine?

3. How do I tell the make files which compiler to use?

4. Does anyone have any experience of setting up the Alcatel Speedtouch 330 under a given kernel? Have read the http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/ site and am aware of some firmware that may need to be put to the modem (KQD6P2.eni). Does this still have to be done under 2.4.2x (x >=2) and are the results good or bad?

Look forward to hearing from you. Please reply to list.

Lesley
