Or you could quite easily go the other way - GNU/Linux systems tend to
have a lot of server functionality built in, compared to the rather
feature-starved Windows systems. So, why not treat the Win98 machine as
the client? FTP is an option, as is Apache HTTP. Even e-mail. You can
also get PuTTY and friends for Windows, which will allow you to copy
files using the secure SSH protocol.

It does have some sort of documentation :) There are various how-tos,
and I believe the O'Reilly Samba book is available gratis in electronic
format. No need to mount the Windows machine either - you can make a
share available on the Linux server (or, just use your home directory
which will usually be setup by default) and just copy ad-hoc.

Also, don't forget that most VNC clients give you the ability to move
information from one clipboard to another: if you're just pulling small
pieces of text (URLs, for example) that can be invaluable.
