20Gb FAT partition? Then why the worry about NTFS?

None. (Reading is barely in place)

You can apparently make use of the Windows driver for reasonably good
read/write support, but that's seriously dodgy. 

Any reason your download directory can't be FAT, assuming it's actually
NTFS and you lied to us?

There are supposedly ext2 drivers for Windows out there too, no idea
what shape they're in. I would think they would work though, given the
source is out there and all.
