My laptop (Dell L400) defaulted to a 640x480 small square by default,
there's a Fn+<KEY> combination which flips between standard fonts (the
small square) or extended fonts.... As I remember there was an option in
BIOS for the default mode to use.

This is without any Framebuffer.
