Ha... Wouldya believe it... The Gigabyte MB in the server had a Realtek
chipset embedded LAN.

Disable it in the BIOS, install a different NIC, reboot and reconfigure,
and everything springs into life.

Perhaps there really was something in the suggestion I read somewhere
that you stick with Intel NICs?
