I am happily using 2.6.1-mm5 on my desktop and laptop. They are great,
but even the betas were pretty stable too. I think they are worth
upgrading to so long as you won't miss what is lost too much.

DRI doesn't seem to be working yet, nforce drivers are difficult, vmware
has problems too. If you don't have any of these problems then go for
it. Remember to compile ALSA - it's in the kernel now.

I use a program called chkrootkit (http://www.chkrootkit.org/), and this
compares many of the binaries for you. Changing kernel wouldn't
necessarily remove a root kit. IDS such as snort etc can help, as can
logging off server to another more secure server, or even to a printer!
Kills trees, but no hacker can delete the logs without breaking into
your house/server room!

Hope that helps a little anyway. 2.6.1 may not necessarily be the
easiest to upgrade to though - depending upon distro. You will probably
need to compile in /dev support, etc...
