[Sheflug] Screen capture utilities

I've seen the use of screen capture utilities to demonstrate software in
classrooms (and again afterwards if students didn't fully grasp it the first
time round (2nd chance learning)). The files created were AVI and had a
commentary as the sound track. However I don't know of any that work under
Linux.
I'm considering creating a set of "video tutorials" for teachers to use to
achieve targets set out in the National curriculum. I'd like to be able to
produce both M$ Office and OpenOffice.org resources (and combined ones too)
in order to get exposure for the alternatives to M$.

The last product I used was Lotus ScreenCam and I saw Camtasia
(techsmith.com) used yesterday but it costs lots. Any suggestions welcome,
for either M$ or Linux based screen capture and it would be nice if the same
software was available on both OSes. Small download size is preferable as
is not needing extra plugins to view.

Thanks
