Hi Janet,
I use MDK10CE & KDE3.2, but assume this works on all desktops.  Press
alt-f2, type "kppp" without the quotes and press enter.  This will bring up
the dialer, I configured my (external) modem from there and if I remember
correctly (at work on a w98 m/c) as long as you know the device name so can
you.  Sure some of the guys can help with device names.
When you get it working you can create a shortcut to kppp by right clicking
the desktop and creating a shortcut to the application.
Good luck - I never got my conaxant winmodem to work and am on a hand-me
down motorola voicesufr from a friend who went broadband!!
