what I like to do is disable the 2nd com port in the BIOS this is on
board but may never get used.

this can give you comA (serial0) on board external, comB (serial1) modem
interface.

If you do this you will have to correct Win98, but that should be no
problem

I have one spare external modem if you still have no luck forward your
postal address to fred.dodd [at] ntc.ac.uk and I will send it via post, but
would ask for it back if ever you stop using the external modem, it
should work on external 9 pin com port, has split cable for 25pin
serial.
