[Sheflug] HELP - stuck on runlevel

Hi Everyone,

Had a really good day at the seminar. Brett very kindly sorted out my
modem. He used my monitor, but his keyboard and mouse.

I got home plugged it all in and went away to dish up the pasta.

When I came back the machine was in Kudzu and counting down to 0. I realised
it was something to do with the keyboard and mouse, so without thinking said
'ignore' to everything. Then it finished booting up. I got to the login
screen, but the keyboard and mouse weren't responding. So I pressed the
reset button.

It then rebooted but stopped after
INIT: version 2.84 booting
INIT: /etc/inittab(1):id field too long (max 4 characters)

The 1 was enclosed by square brackets not curved. The following lines were
virtually the same apart from the 1 changed through all the numbers through
to 11 and the 'max 4' changed to 11 a couple of times.

Then it said:-
Enter runlevel:

I rebooted into Windows and checked online about runlevel. I then rebooted
and tried typing 0 and then rebooting and tried 5. With either number I got
Enter runlevel: 0
INIT: Entering runlevel: 0
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

Once it got to this point, I couldn't do anything with the keyboard or
mouse. If I had had time to think about it I would have said remove
configuration which I presume would have been for the other keyboard and
mouse (the stress of the countdown) and then it would have probed for mine.

Now, I can't boot up, any help gratefully received.

Yours MORTIFIED

Janet
