I don't know about drive speed; I guess in theory it's possible, but the
drives themselves are substantially the same across SATA, PATA, and SCSI
AFAICT - it's just the electronics that are different.  Or so I've been
told.  They reckon that SATA will eventually have faster data transfer
rates than parallel ATA, and the small cable is supposed to improve
airflow through the chassis (therefore giving better cooling and longer
drive life).  Oh, and you can have longer cables than PATA currently
supports, apparently.  Personally, I find the connectors a right pain -
when we have to build a machine using SATA, we hot-glue the connectors in
place.
