[Sheflug] shared hosting on apache : DNS issue

I've got a website on a shared server (running apache) that I'm setting up
for a friend. As his current site is live I've added the shared server ip
address of the new server to my hosts file along with his domain name.

When I ping his domain name or ftp to it I get the new site but when I point
my web browser at it I get the old site. This happens whatever browser I
use and on both Suse and XP.

I do have an IPCop firewall in place but can't see how this would effect
things as the PC should already have an ip address from the hosts file.

Accessing the new website from home (via dial up) works fine for pinging,
ftp and www (no ip cop).

I'm stumped on this one. I can't put just the ip address of the new host
server in teh address bar of my browser as it then doesn't know which of the
domains it hosts to display.

2 Questions:
1: Can I put something in the address bar of my browser that will tell the
apache server hosting my website which site needs serving (something like
domain.com [at] 123.45.67.8 where the domain.com is the domain name and
123.45.67.8 is the shared hosting apache server IP address. I've tried that
and it doesn't work)
2: Why might my PCs request for http at one ip address be redirected to
another?
