Possibly because you're using a funky java based chat applet? Why not
just let people use normal irc clients like XChat & irssi? The
Hampshire linux user group has a channel #hants on the irc.blitzed.org
network. There is even an irc.lug.org.uk irc server.

The Dorset and Northants lugs also have channels (#dorset and #nlug
respectively) on the blitzed network.
