I'm not familiar with Mandrake, but isn't there a boot CD you can boot to some version of "rescue mode" off of? Then mount up your HD onto some convenient /mnt mount point and edit /etc/inittab (with any editor you like provided it's on the boot CD ;-) and look for the line that says id:5:initdefault. Change the 5 to a 3 and reboot off the HD this time, and Robert is your proverbial mother's brother.
