Latest version of debian - do you mean "woody", or one of the releases

Sounds like a memory problem.
Two things to try - first, try running memtest86 on it. Some Debian CDs
have this as a boot option, but I can't remember which. You can stick it
on a floppy or something, though.
Second - when you get to the lilo: prompt when trying to install, enter
something like "linux mem=64" (it's documented on one of the boot prompt
screens, I'm sure). If it works when you do that, it's either faulty ram
or (more possibly) a very strange on-board video setup (I'm thinking
shared video ram that Linux isn't detecting or something).
