Re: [Sheflug] ADSL SP and hardware recommendations (Slightly OT but it is to connect my Linux box to the net!)

A colleague installed the E-Buyer special (Origo) it's fine but there is a
nasty, by default telnet is enabled on the ADSL interface !! with a

job is to change user/password and disable remote telnet.

Personally I like Linksys stuff and it also tends to be good value for
money and it's eminently hackable being Linux based.

Hi Folks,
I have a new DG834G from Ebuyer which suits me fine.
Everything you need in one box - DSL modem, Firewall (IPTables based), router, Wireless AP (802.11g/b), 4 port hub.

It is Lunux based (2.4 kernel) runs a MIPS processor and the firmware is open source!
However there are some pre-compiled binaries in the source which allow control from the web interface.

see here:

There is a group dedicated to creating a hacked version of the firmware: https://gna.org/projects/opendg

You can start a 'debug' telnet daemon which gives root access with no password. To do this you have to open a URL from a browser on the LAN interface and enter the admin username/password. Not the best security I agree but your average user would not be doing this.
There is NO telnet (or other dodgy service) open to the world by default.

It does support Upnp but the very idea is rather dangerous so I've disabled it. - another discussion perhaps :)

The only thing which could be improved is the web interface. It only allows selection of TCP and UDP protocols when creating firewall rules.
I expect Netgear will be working on various improvements.

If you need any more details just let me know...

Yours,
Andy

P.S. For those who remember my new server, new distro question. I'm now happily running Gentoo and loving every emerge minute!
