I don't know about avoid, but the thing to look for is something that
offers DOS compatibility (some of the boxes even proclaim Linux
compatibility). Also, note that a lot of lower end printers only come
with USB ports. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer parallel ports!

For mono, anything that supports PCL5 / 6 or Postscript should be OK.
Off the top, I don't know what the colour equivalent of PCL5 / 6 is. It
(strangely) may be PCL5 or 6.

Fortunately, none of my staff are on the list, otherwise they'd be sure
to tell of my blunder of buying four Brother HL1530 lasers which we
found out after are GDI printers. It would have been alright, but we'd
planned for using them on our LTSP shopfloor terminals! All was not lost
though - they got given to (un)deserving Windows users and we used
HL1540's instead!
