Canons are doorstops. Epsons have typically provided good linux
compatibility but they make the ink very expensive. HPs are generally a
good make to go for. Kyocera is excellent (see below).

I personally prefer usb for printing on Linux, simply because it's
faster than the parallel port and the cables are easier to (un)plug.

Whoops!
An excellent printer manufacturer is Kyocera, whose mono laser printers
are inexpensive, print double sided, have very low cartridge costs and
are Linux compatible and work perfectly.
We supply these set up for Linux use and can recommend them highly.
