Third-party stuff will always be a bit iffy (although, the complete
install instructions for firefox - for any user - can be as simple as
'tar -zxf firefox*.tar.gz && firefox/firefox' :)

I think what Ben was saying was that most apps are bundled by your
distro, and actually if you use those you'll find they integrate better,
by default, than on Windows and it's not a complex process.

For example, on Ubuntu you could have 'apt-get install
firefox' (although it's installed by default ;) and that would download
the software for you, install it, set it up in your Applications menu,
set up all the mime-type links (where you click on an HTML file and it
launches the right program) and all that kind of stuff.

Also, if you stick with your distro's software, you'll find that you
also get security updates, plus when you come to upgrade your OS it will
upgrade all your apps as well, so everything should still run smoothly.

I think the problem you're having is just that it's *different*, but I
think you'll like the GNU/Linux way in the long run.
