Assuming Knoppix uses one of GRUB or LILO; methods for dual booting using either of these have been well documented.
However I have one box out of action by a conglomeration of a SuSE update that went wrong and rescue attempts using woodyr2. Sarge is recommended as fairly stable now.

Depends on what you want to keep and what you want to lose.
:-)
If you have partitioned the Linux space up, so that /home is on it's own partition, then you might well be able to simply replace the operating system parts.
I found that one install of Suse 8.2 used /opt for gnome, kde and OpenOffice installations. This appears to have been second choice to installation under /usr because I later reconfigured my partitions, increasing the size of /usr, and found that, on this install, Suse 8.2 had decided to put all of them in /usr.
Would love to hear more details on how this part goes. What you gained and lost. Whether you did a complete overwrite of the existing system and personal data or not.
Regards
Lesley
