If you think Mambo is 99% there, then maybe the solution is to get a
friendly Mambo hacker to play on the code. I've hacked it myself before,
it's not terribly complex. Both problems could probably be solved
relatively easily.

Oh dear ;) For some reason, though, that doesn't totally surprise me.

I last installed Zope from Debian testing - if you can, give that a go:
it set it up (for me) to a working configuration, so you could at least
get to that point ;)

Right, management scalability. I would guess Mambo hasn't been designed
to be so "horizontal" (i.e., scaling out to many hundreds of users). 

I would be interested to know how you get on with this project though;
it definitely sounds interesting.
