I had to do this recently and used The Gimp, but it was creating all the
buttons at different sizes depending on the amount of text, which was
obviously a pain as I then had to resize them all manually afterwards.

Was I missing something obvious?
Depending on what exactly you were doing, you could define a button background as having three sections, left, middle and right. Then print the left image, get GD to print the button on a background of width X and then right.

Then if you have to change graphics, just change the background.

I'm sure you could also dynamically create them this way and save them to stop having to generate each time?
