I had to do this recently and used The Gimp, but it was creating all the
buttons at different sizes depending on the amount of text, which was
obviously a pain as I then had to resize them all manually afterwards.
Was I missing something obvious?
Depending on what exactly you were doing, you could define a button
background as having three sections, left, middle and right. Then print
the left image, get GD to print the button on a background of width X
and then right.
