Is your networking adding ipv6 by default as well as normal ipv4? (do 
you see weird, and unexpected addresses on /sbin/ifconfig ??)

That used to mess my Mandrake system(s) up a lot, causing all manner 
of dns issues with huge amounts of time to look up addresses.

I think adding

alias ipv6 off

or

alias net-pf-10 off

to either /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf (depending on which 
system is used..)
I added both to both files to be sure...
