I am thinking about getting a new external modem, and giving my daughter my old one, Amazon has some usb modems, will they work with Suse 9? and what are the pro's and con's of them? sorry to ask but I'm feeling my age at the moment,

The Alcatel Speedtouch worked ok for me especially once they'd included the drivers in the kernel. But it was a pain to set up under SuSE 8.2.

I have however now "upgraded" to a D-Link DSL-300T ADSL/Ethernet job because I am now also using BSD as my gateway machine and hanging a home network off the other side of that.

All you need for an Ethernet style modem is a NIC in your box and the modem. No driver problems with Ethernet at all.

I can confirm that SuSE 9.2 chugs along quite happily with the D-Link DSL-300T connected a D-Link DFE528TX ethernet card in the box. Bought both off http://www.ebuyer.co.uk .

If you are happy to fit a network card in your box I would advise that sort of route rather than a USB modem.
