I know jack about networking but found it very easy to set-up a Netgear 
firewall router with cable to my network card. In fact Mepis and Suse 9.3 set 
the connection up automatically, bar some fine tuning (with help from the 
forum) with the Suse set-up.

So if you have broadband I would recommend that route as relatively trouble 
free. If you have dialup Holy Water and three 'Hail Marys' might help.
