Presuming you mean a standard dial-up modem, don't get USB - much more hassle 
than they're worth. Go for a good old serial modem which is guaranteed to 
work.

If you mean ADSL modems, then your best bet is to get an Ethernet device. Some 
USB ones will work, but they'll be a hassle...
