[Sheflug] Firefox delayed input

Hello all,

On Saturday I met a user who was very upset with his system and was wondering 
if he had to do yet another installation.

His problem was that for some reason Firefox had become slow.
Not its actual rendering, but for inputting text.
An example was when he opened Google and started to type a query. The cursor 
did not appear in the search box and he had finished typing a couple of words 
before any characters appeared in the box.
Entering a URL also had the same delay.

Trouble was, I had started to get similar problems that had disappeared when I 
did a new installation and so had another chap who was listening.

What could be causing this degradation of speed for keyboard input?
Has he (and I previously) configured something wrong?

He was running a 2.xGHz machine with 512MB Ram and KDE.
