Hi everyone.
This is my first post. I have Red Hat Linux installed and a Broadband
Account with Tiscali.
I need to download a Linux driver to start using email and the Internet.
I requested help from Tiscali but not received a reply.
Is there anyone who uses Tiscali who can help me?
Best wishes,
Zoe
Hello and welcome to Linux.
Personally I'd get rid of Tiscali and go for something better as an ISP
but that stems from my experience of them in 2000.
You've been fed a load of hogwash about your ISP requiring drivers. It's
also sadly still highly unlikely you will get support from an ISP for
Linux because each distro (Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, Ubuntu, Debian etc
etc ) does things in slightly different ways and this makes it difficult
for ISP's to be able to offer support. You may be lucky if technical
support people at your ISP are motivated to provide generalised Linux
support.
Drivers are for hardware. We need to know what hardware you are using
to connect to the 'net to be able to advise you further. (I've had a
quick look at the Tiscali site and they don't specify what modem they
send you. Probably the cheapest they can find in order to maximise
their profits? ).
As far as using email is concerned, you need an email client. This is a
program that can be setup to collect email from email servers and send
email out via those same servers. It doesn't need any drivers once your
Internet connection is working properly. I use Thunderbird but there
are others out there. Thunderbird is also available for Windows
platforms so you might want to look at what's required to set it up to
send and retrieve email under Windows. That part will be the same under
any Linux platform.
