"Hello and welcome to Linux.

Personally I'd get rid of Tiscali and go for something better as an ISP

but that stems from my experience of them in 2000."

Hi Lesley.

If you want to recommend another ISP I'm willing to listen. There is no

reason for me to be loyal to Tiscali.

"You've been fed a load of hogwash about your ISP requiring drivers. It's

also sadly still highly unlikely you will get support from an ISP for

Linux because each distro (Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, Ubuntu, Debian etc

etc ) does things in slightly different ways and this makes it difficult

for ISP's to be able to offer support. You may be lucky if technical

support people at your ISP are motivated to provide generalised Linux

support.

Drivers are for hardware. We need to know what hardware you are using

to connect to the 'net to be able to advise you further. " <SNIP>

Yes I did not put enough thought into that email. I think I was nervous

because you know all about Linux and I don't. I have used it a little and I

used UNIX back in the Jurassic age. I'm not a 'Windows person' though..... I

am more used to OS/2 and have decided after trying Windoze XP over the last
year

that I would rather migrate to Linux. OS/2 is going to be around for a few
years more

under license from Serenity Systems as eComStation but realistically, I can
t

imagine IBM wanting this to continue once their corporate licensees have

moved to Linux. So I am investigating Linux and I'll start migrating as soon

as I've got the hang of it. I'll still keep OS/2 for old times sake but
Windoze gets the boot ;)

The supplied Modem is a SAGEM F [at] st 800 ADSL Modem. I also have an Origo ADSL

Router so I might be better going with that and networking my Laptop at the

same time.

"As far as using email is concerned, you need an email client. <SNIP>. I use

Thunderbird but there are others out there." <SNIP>

I have looked. I already have Thunderbird. I haven't tried to use it yet -

not even under Windoze. That might be sufficient to begin with though.

"Here are some urls that might help you <SNIP>

Regards

Lesley

Thank you, Lesley. I'll check these out.
